What To Expect
If this is your first massage therapy session, you may be curious about what to expect before, during, and after a typical massage.

Before your massage, it is probably best to not eat a large meal.  Some people like to take a warm shower or bath to assist them with feeling comfortable and relaxed.

When you arrive for your appointment, you will be greeted and given a health intake form to fill in.  This will provide your therapist with some valuable information pertaining to your current and past health.  Upon completing the form, your therapist will show you into the massage treatment room and then do a verbal intake.  During this time, the two of you will discuss what your needs and goals for the session are, and they can answer any questions you may have. After this intake is finished, they will exit the room and you will prepare to get on the massage table.  Before getting on the table, you may disrobe as much or as little as, you prefer.

Many styles of massage therapy are most effective when performed directly on the skin; however, you may leave your clothing on if you prefer.  Once on the table and in between the sheets you can relax and enjoy the peacefulness.  The massage therapist will give you plenty of time to get yourself situated and they will knock on the door before re-entering the room so take your time.

Once the therapist re-enters, they will then make sure that you feel comfortable, adjusting anything to your liking such as the lighting, music, room temperature and/or table temperature. As the massage begins it is your time to simply relax and gently breathe.

A full body massage typically includes the head, face, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, legs, feet, buttocks and back.  When each area is being worked the sheet is pulled back exposing only that area and then respectfully replaced.  If there are areas of your body that you are not comfortable with having massaged, for any reason, mention this to the therapist.  You do not need to explain or rationalize your reasons.

Eventually the massage will have to end and your therapist will again leave the room.  It is very important that you get up slowly.  Sit on the side of the table for a few minutes and take your time getting up.  Getting up to quickly after a massage therapy session can cause dizziness.  If this occurs, please mention it to the therapist.  They can apply a few techniques before you leave to make sure you are grounded.

It is very important that you keep open communication with your therapist.  Massage should never be painful.  If you are uncomfortable with anything they do whether physical or emotional, it is important that it is verbalized.  It will not be taken personally and it will help create the perfect session for you in the future.
